mothers day mother's day grandmother

Many moms appreciate breakfast in bed, homemade cards, chocolates, flowers, or jewelry for Mother’s Day, but what the majority of mom’s cherish the most is the quality time spent with their loved ones. Mother’s Day marks the beginning of National Women’s Health Week (May 14-20, 2023). The FDA’s Office of Women’s Health (OWH) theme for 2023 is “to encourage women to #KNOWHmore About Your Health, Today and Every Day.” So this year, try something different and spend this time with mom to focus on her health. There are many ways to treat mom to a special day and make her feel loved while also doing things together that support a healthy lifestyle.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the five things women should focus on or do to improve their health are:
●    healthy eating
●    physical activity
●    routine doctor visits for screenings and checkups
●    cease unhealthy habits, like smoking
●    mental health, stress management, and adequate sleep

Prepare a healthy brunch, lunch, or dinner for Mother’s Day

    • Mom has made sure the entire family has been fed and nourished throughout her life. This Mother’s Day return the favor and treat her to a healthy meal. The risk of heart disease can be reduced with a healthy diet so be sure to add heart healthy foods to your Mother’s Day meal.

Get some exercise

    • Mother’s Day is the perfect time to get outside, the flowers are in bloom and the sun is starting to come out. Go for a walk in your neighborhood or take mom to a park for a nice stroll. If the weather isn’t cooperating, you can get some indoor exercise by going to a museum, a mall, or a fitness class. Gardening is another fun activity that can encourage mom to be active and she’ll have beautiful flowers and plants to enjoy when she goes outside.

Schedule a health checkup

    • Moms are focused on the family and sometimes tend to ignore their own health. So this year, show her that you care about her by gifting her a health check up or go with her to her appointment. She’s sure to feel loved and cared for and will enjoy the quality time. You could even make a day of it by taking her to lunch after the appointment or go for a walk in a park.

Pamper mom

    • As mom gets older, she may not have the opportunity to get dressed up or have her hair and nails done. For some women this can impact their mental health. Spending the day pampering mom can do wonders to help mom boost her attitude.
