Outdoor activities have many mind, body, and soul benefits for seniors. The physical activity has been found to combat health conditions and can even play a vital role in mental fitness. Being outdoors also has the added benfit of breathing fresh air and soaking up Vitamin D. When going outside be sure to wear comfortable shoes, start out slow, prepare for changing weather, and prepare for allergies if you deal with seasonal allergies that accompany springtime. Here are a few ways you can enjoy the great outdoors with the older adults in your life.

1. Nature Walks. Find a local park, nature trail, lake, pond, or even your own neighborhood to take a walk, relax, and enjoy the outdoors. It’s a good idea to find a trail that has several benches or picnic tables that can allow for rest breaks that can double as a bird watching or bloom spotting opportunity.

2. Picnics. Packing a picnic for your walk is a lovely way to spend an afternoon with your client or family member. Pack their favorite picnic food and don’t forget to bring a deck of cards, a game, or some books to read to enjoy some quality time with them.

3. Gardening or Visit a Local Farmer’s Market. Gardening is a great activity for seniors to get light exercise and they get to enjoy the fruits of the labor. They can grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables that they can eat or flowers and trees they can watch and enjoy. Studies have found that gardening can reduce the risk of health issues in seniors and it also has a calming effect. If gardening isn’t your cup of tea, you can visit a local farmer’s market for fresh local produce, socializing, and enjoying the warmer weather.

4. Go Fishing. Fishing is another low impact activity for seniors to enjoy that can encourage them to get out of the house more.

You don’t always need to travel far away to explore. Visit a historic area or maybe a new part of town you haven’t visited yet. You might be surprised by what your own town has to offer.

Bring the sights and smells of Spring to your or your client’s indoor space. You can do this by bringing in some fresh seasonal flowers and foliage either from the garden or the local farmer’s market. With Easter coming up, you can also put out some Easter decorations to get into the holiday spirit. Use bunnies, eggs, and crosses to add some Easter spirit to the home.

3. Seasonal Crafts and Activities

In addition to Easter, springtime also contains Mother’s Day, both of these holidays are great opportunities for seasonal crafts. For Easter you can dye or paint easter eggs, create Easter baskets, or cook Easter treats like a carrot cake or chocolate bunnies. Making cards for loved ones is a fun activity for both Easter and Mother’s Day. You can also create handmade Easter or Mother’s Day gifts.

Egg hunts are a popular seasonal Easter activity whether you are doing the hiding, the hunting, or just observing, they can be fun for all. Playing seasonally themed games like bingo or a word search can be a fun activity, as well as, adult coloring books or pages that are Easter or Mother’s Day themed. A lot of people enjoy participating in church services either in person or virtually for Easter or Mother’s Day.

Light cleaning is a perfect exercise for older adults and you get the added benefit of a cleaner home. Springtime is a great time to reevaluate your living situation and freshen it up for a renewed outlook. Studies have found that a clean house makes most people happier, reduces stress, and boosts productivity. When spring cleaning, it’s not just about tidying up but you want to be sure to dust you home as well. Dusting can improve your health by reducing the allergy inducing dust particles hanging around your house after it being shut up for the Winter. So put on a fun springtime playlist, maybe open up a window to let in some fresh Spring air, and clean your way to a brighter, happier home.
